From Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰéntis (“act of killing, blow”), from *gʷʰen- (“to strike”). Equivalent to a hypothetical verb *benaną (from which *banô (“murderer”), *banjō (“wound”), with *gw- > *b-) + *-þiz.
