From Proto-Indo-European *ḱolnó-, *ḱelnó- (room), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱol-, *ḱel- (to hide, cover, conceal, protect). Cognate with Latin cella (room, cell), Sanskrit शाला (śālā, house, mansion, hall).
