From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱmoros, (c.f. Sanskrit aśmará 'stony'), a derivation from *h₂éḱmō (stone) (c.f. Sanskrit अश्मन् (aśman) 'stone'), from the root *h₂eḱ- (sharp).
