Proto-Germanic [edit]
Etymology [edit]
From Scythian *kanabis (compare Farsi kanab, Ossetian gän), a compound of Finno-Ugric *kéne (“hemp”) + *piš (“to burn; nettle”) (compare Hungarian kender, 'hemp', and peszeg, 'to burn'). Although a loanword, it was borrowed early enough for the word to be affected by Grimm's law, shifting k to h and b to p. Cognate with Latin cannabis and its descendant, English canvas.
