Proto-Indo-European *lAḱis- (salmon, trout). Cognate to Proto-Slavic *lososь, Ossetian лæсæг (læsæg, salmon), and Tocharian B laksi (fish).[1] See lax and Latvian lasis for further non-Germanic cognates.
