From Proto-Indo-European *mer-, *smer- (to fall into thought, remember, care for). Cognate with *maimrōną (to think, ponder, muse, think out), Latin memor (mindful, thoughtful), Sanskrit [script needed] (smárati, he remembers, recollects).
