From Proto-Indo-European *sh₂éy-ōl ~ *sh₂i-l-és, from *sh₂ey- (to bind, fetter). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (iš-hi-ia-al, band), and possibly Proto-Balto-Slavic *séiˀlāˀ (soul).
