Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *wisAn- (aurochs, aurochs horn). Compare Lithuanian stumbras (aurochs, bison), Sanskrit [script needed] (viṣāṇā, horn, tusk, tip, point), or from a root meaning "to stink". [Devanagari needed]
