From imperative form of *mьstiti (take vengeance, revenge, avenge) +‎ *ujь (uncle on mother's side), from Proto-Indo-European *mith₂-ti-, *h₂ewh₂-i-o- (> Proto-Balto-Slavic *auʔ(i)o-).
