From Proto-Balto-Slavic *berźas, *berźā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵs.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian béržas, Latvian bȩ̃rzs, bẽrze and Old Prussian berse.

Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit भूर्ज (bhūrja, a species of birch), Proto-Germanic *birkijǭ, Old Armenian բարտի (barti, poplar) and Latin fraxinus (ash tree).
