Etymology[edit]

From earlier *piskělь, from *piskati, *piščati (squeak, whistle) +‎ *-ělь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *pīṣk-. According to Derksen, it's best to posit an onomatopoeic root *pī- followed by the suffix *-sk-.
