From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skaujás, from Proto-Indo-European *skowyós, from *skwey- (needle, prickle, thorn).

Compare Albanian hu (stake, pole; penis) (from Proto-Albanian *skuna < *skuja + *-na, from Proto-Indo-European *skuy-ós).
