From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wondōr, from Proto-Indo-European *wédōr, collective of of PIE r/n-stem heteroclitic *wódr̥ (genitive *udnós).
Balto-Slavic cognates include Lithuanian vanduo, Latvian ūdens and Old Prussian wundan.
