Many suffixes used in taxonomic names indicate the rank of the taxonomic name. Their modern use is governed by the ICN and the ICZN. They are mostly based on nominative plural forms of adjective suffixes from Latin.

Other, unregulated uses are of Latin suffixes and New Latin forms of Classical Greek suffixes with meaning derived from use in those languages.
