Is german 'genügend' a descendent? 80.121.90.114 11:36, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is a descendant, but it is related. Dutch also has genoegen, but in this case the oe (pronounced as German u) shows that the original word had a long o, because long o becomes oe in Dutch and u in German. The original short u of Germanic would have become o in Dutch, although in preterite-present verbs like this one, it usually becomes u, but that is pronounced as German ü. So, the Dutch word certainly does not descend from this verb, and because the German word could descend from either one it's more likely that it's related to the Dutch verb than formed separately. So I think they probably don't descend from this word directly, but are derived from *ganōgaz, which is related to it but has the long o that the Dutch form says it should have. —CodeCat 12:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
