Appendix talk:Variations of Arabic language
Naming convention for Arabic varieties[edit]
The naming convention of the varieties of Arabic viz. XXXX Arabic (e.g. Libyan Arabic, Egyptian Arabic), make them appear scattered and interspersed by other languages when the words are similar (see example below) in the pages that contain more than on variety. I suggest that they be renamed to Arabic, XXXX (e.g. Arabic, Libyan) this way they will appear in sequence which greatly facilitates comparison between different varieties.
Example:
In the current convention if Farsi has a similarly looking word, say فيل, the order of languages will look like this:
Arabic
فيل
Egyptian Arabic
فيل
Farsi
فيل
Libyan Arabic
فيل
If the naming convention is changed as mentioned above, they will look more natural like the following:
Arabic
فيل
Arabic, Egyptian
فيل
Arabic, Libyan
فيل
Farsi
فيل

Pretty pointless and incomplete. Were it to be done well, it would simply be redundant with Category:Arabic languages. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:32, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Delete I'm reluctant to delete anything in the appendix namespace if it even has the slightest content but this is really serving no purpose at the moment. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 07:55, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- If someone bothers to make it comprehensive (i.e. include sociolects of those various Arabic dialects) then I would say keep. Otherwise weak delete. —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 22:07, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
- Delete. This was a prototype thing. I created that appendix in 2008 because some entries and pages in Arabic languages other than Arabic itself were inside Category:Arabic language, and some categories like Category:Egyptian Arabic language were inside Category:Arabic language too. I was trying to design some way to keep the latter as the category for "Arabic" language only, not as a place to keep stuff from other related languages. The proper family category, Category:Arabic languages, was created later in 2011. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 22:14, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
