From Latin barbarus (foreigner, savage), from Greek βάρβαρος(barbaros) "foreign, strange", onomatopoeic (mimicking foreign languages, akin to 'blah blah'). From Proto-Indo-European base *barbar-, echoic of unintelligible speech of foreigners.
