From French bizarre (“‘odd, peculiar, bizarre, formerly headlong, angry’”), from Spanish bizarro (“‘gallant, brave, valiant’”), probably from Basque bizarra (“‘beard’”); cf. Spanish hombre de bigote (“‘a man of spirit’”) (bigote (“‘mustache’”)).
