English words from Old French usually via Middle English. Some of these words however entered Middle English via the Anglo-Norman variant of Old French (cattle, eagle, etc.). Anglo-Norman had distinct sound-features, notably Latin c was preserved and did not become ch as in standard Old French (compare Anglo-Norman catel vs Old French chatel). There were other differences as well.
