Borrowed from Arabic قُرْآن (qurʔān, recitation), from قِرَاءَة (qirāʔa, reading, recitation), from قَرَأَ (qaraʔa, to declaim, to recite), apparently after Classical Syriac ܩܪܝܢܐ (qeriānā, reading; scripture).
