Translingual[edit]

Dasypus novemcinctus (nine-banded armadillo)

Etymology[edit]

From Latin dasypus cucurbitinus (“gourd-like rabbit”), a mistaken calque of Classical Nahuatl āyōtōchin (armadillo), as though it were from ayohtli (gourd) +‎ tōchin (rabbit); in fact it is from āyōtl (tortoise) +‎ tōchin (rabbit).

Proper noun[edit]

Dasypus m

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Dasypodidae – the long-nosed or naked-tailed armadillos.
