To multiply $(2 x + 4)(4 x + 3 y)$ :

The first terms multiply to $2 x 4 x = 8 x 2$ ;
the outer terms to $2 x 3 y = 6 x y$ ;
the inner terms to $4(4 x) = 16 x$ ; and
the last terms to $4(3 y) = 12 y$ .

Thus the product is $8 x 2 + 6 x y + 16 x + 12 y$ .
