Title
Early medieval: Enamelled nummular brooch
Description
English: An Early Medieval copper-alloy circular brooch, originally enamelled in the champlevé technique. The brooch is slightly domed and displays an outlined profile bust facing right. The bust has multi-strand long hair swept back to rest on the shoulders. The eye and ear are both clear in outline but other features are more perfunctorily rendered. The shoulders and upper torso are clad in a tunic. A speck of blue enamel survives in one cell. On the reverse is a hinge and catchplate, arranged so that the catchplate is upper most in relation to the orientation fo the bust.

This brooch appears to be a development of a group of late Early Medieval 'nummular' brooches (based on late Roman coinage). On these the bust is often encircled with a ring of pellets. It is probably also related to other idiosyncratic champleve enamelled disc brooches, such as Weetch type 8 brooches decorated with animals (e.g. KENT-9A1278) or SF-CA07A7, which may have a standing human figure.

In view of the enamel a date range from c.900-c.1100 may be suggested.
