Etymology[edit]

From rare or northern Middle High German vluht (genitive vlühte), from Old High German *fluht, from Proto-West Germanic *fluhti (flight), here not as a derivative of *fleuhaną (to flee), but of *fleuganą (to fly), for which otherwise Middle High German vluc. Compare Middle Dutch vlucht, modern Low German Flucht, both with a sense “wing of a bird”. Also cognate with English flight (flying).
