Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From an underlying Middle High German *vlügelinc or *vliegelinc. The former, which is the interpretation of the Rheinisches Wörterbuch (lemma Flügeling), would be an enhanced form of vlügel (wing), from Proto-Germanic *flugilaz. The latter, which is phonetically more in line with the Luxembourgish form, would be from Middle High German vliegen (to fly) + the suffix -linc, equivalent to Proto-Germanic *fleuganą + *-lingaz.
