Etymology[edit]

From German Low German Göre (17th century). Further origin unknown; possibly from an adjective meaning "small" (Middle High German gōrec, Old High German gōrag), with an original meaning "small helpless creature," ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (short)[1] A relation with English girl, likewise of uncertain origin, is possible.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɡøːʁə/
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Göre f (genitive Göre, plural Gören)

  1. (possibly derogatory, but usually mild) cheeky young child, brat

Usage notes[edit]

  • The word most often refers to girls, but this is not necessarily so, particularly not in the plural.
