Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The underlying meaning is roughly “wattle, sheaf or heap of straw etc.” (compare Luxemburger Wörterbuch and lemma Häupe in Rheinisches Wörterbuch). Probably with irregular lengthening from a Proto-West Germanic *hupp-, whence also East Flemish hoppe (tussock), French houppe (tuft); further perhaps related with Proto-Germanic *haupaz (heap). In some senses the word also blends with Käip, which is cognate with German Kiepe (wicker basket).
