Luxembourgish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The underlying meaning is roughly “wattle, sheaf or heap of straw etc.” (compare Luxemburger Wörterbuch and lemma Häupe in Rheinisches Wörterbuch). Probably with irregular lengthening from a Proto-West Germanic *hupp-, whence also East Flemish hoppe (“tussock”), French houppe (“tuft”); further perhaps related with Proto-Germanic *haupaz (“heap”). In some senses the word also blends with Käip, which is cognate with German Kiepe (“wicker basket”).
