German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the verb kontern, from English to counter (originally in the context of boxing). The noun is probably not derived directly from the verb but as a clipping of the noun Konterschlag (counterstrike, backlash), from kontern + Schlag. Compare also the prefix konter-, from French contre, which influenced the phonetic form of these words.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkɔntɐ/
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Konter m (strong, genitive Konters, plural Konter)

  1. (sports) counter-attack
  2. (figurative) repartee; comeback (witty answer)
