Etymology

The etymology is uncertain; older forms are Madraspatan, Madraspatanam, and Madraspattinam, the final element being from Sanskrit पत्तन (pattana, “village, city”)^{reference needed}. It is possible that Madras is from Arabic مدرسة (madrásah, “college”), from درس (dárasa, “to learn, to study”).
