First attested as de maldene in 1247. Probably derived from Proto-Germanic *maþla- (gathering, gathering place) with metathesis. Compare Old Saxon mathal (popular gathering, moot), Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌸𐌻 (maþl, marketplace, market) and Old High German mahal (popular gathering, moot).
