Etymology[edit]
From late Middle High German *mālzīt, mālzeit, from māl (“meal”) + zīt (“time”). The Luxembourgish form through a reduced *mālzet with -ch- probably by hypercorrection (as in Aarbecht, Wourecht). Compare German Mahlzeit, Dutch maaltijd.
