From Late Middle High German mugel (lump, clod), probably ultimately from Proto-Germanic *mūgô, from Proto-Indo-European *muk- (heap), similar to Ancient Greek μύκων (múkōn, pile). Germanic cognates include Old English mūga (stack), Old Norse múgi (swathe, crowd).
