Named after German physician Albert Ludwig Sigesmund Neisser (1855–1916) +‎ -ia (taxonomic suffix).

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Neisseriaceae – proteobacteria that colonize the mucosal surfaces of many animals. The genus includes two parasitic bacteria species, one of which is the cause of gonorrhea, the other a cause of meningitis.
