Translingual[edit]

Perilla frutescens

Etymology[edit]

Named by Carl Linnaeus in the 5th edition of the Genera Plantarum, of unknown further origin. Perhaps named after a character of the same name found in poems written by Ovid, though this is unconfirmed because Linnaeus makes no mention of how he derived the name.[1]

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Lamiaceae – the shiso herb, found in southeast and east Asia.
