Etymology[edit]

From Pre-Germanic *skh₁tH-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keh₁t- (damage, harm).[1] Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀσκηθής (askēthḗs, intact, safe, sound, literally without damage). Equivalent to *skaþô (injury, harm, damage) +‎ *-janą.
