Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German regenwurm, from Old High German reganwurm, from Proto-Germanic [Term?]. Analysable as Regen (rain) +‎ Wurm (worm), so called because of the animal’s habit of surfacing after rainfall. Cognate with Old English reġnwyrm, whence English rainworm.
