Etymology[edit]

From rhodo- +‎ -phyceae.

Proper noun[edit]

Rhodophyceae

  1. A taxonomic class within the phylum Rhodophyta — the sole class of red algae.

Usage notes[edit]

Rhodophyceae is a class name, but is effectively synonymous with Rhodophyta — the red algae. It does not appear in all taxonomic systems. ITIS records a subdivision (i.e. subphylum) of Rhodophyta with the name Rhodophytina and synonym Rhodophyceae.
