From Latin Sardanapalus, from Ancient Greek, Σαρδανάπαλος (Sardanápalos), probably ultimately a corruption of Akkadian 𒀸𒋩𒆕𒌉𒍑 (Aššur-bāni-apli, literally Ashur is the creator of an heir).
