Upper German form of Schleife (bow, tie), which see for more. The semantic distinction between both variants is secondary.

Schlaufe f (genitive Schlaufe, plural Schlaufen)

  1. loop, noose (string formed into a ring)
    Synonyms: Schlinge, Masche

  3. Obsolete form of Schleife (bow, tie).
