Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from German Low German Slips, derived from Middle Low German slip, slippe (flap, lappet, tail), probably ultimately related to Proto-West Germanic *slīban (to split). Cognate with Dutch slip, whence possibly also English slip (twig, strip).
