Via other European languages, ultimately a borrowing from Latin, a borrowing from some Nordic language (cf. Proto-Germanic *Skaþinawjō (Scania), Old English Scedenig, Old Norse Skaney (southern tip of Sweden), from *awjō (island) cf. Old English ī(e)g, Old Norse ey, Danish ø, Swedish ö (island)), adapted to follow Latvian patterns (suffix -ija)
