German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Staatsbürger +‎ -schaft.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈʃtaːt͡sbʏʁɡɐˌʃaft]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Staats‧bür‧ger‧schaft

Noun[edit]

Staatsbürgerschaft f (genitive Staatsbürgerschaft, plural Staatsbürgerschaften)

  1. nationality, citizenship
    Synonym: Staatsangehörigkeit

Usage notes[edit]

The word is similar to, but not entirely synonymous with Nationalität. Staatsbürgerschaft means the citizenship of a state, i.e. the possession of a passport, whereas Nationalität means the affiliation with a nation. For example, nationals who live under foreign occupation, continue to have their own nation's “Nationalität”, but may have the occupying country's “Staatsbürgerschaft”.
