чулки ↔ чулок[edit]

Mm.. How to explain.. I've been searching for "чулки" but found the article not existing..
I think that there is a separate lexeme "чулки" in Russian — which is even more regular. I mean, usually we regard the singular form of a word as its base form, but in this case I can see that there are two separate lexemes. Cf. English premise and premises — there are lots of such examples — where the meanings of a pair of number derivatives are almost fully bifurcated. Чулок has separated from the singular of чулки due to its additional idiomatic meaning ("хранить деньги в чулке" not "в чулках") as well as certain patterns of its usage when the speaker doesn't mean a pair of clothing — while чулки are by all means thought of as a pair. I can err, people, in the case if I wrongly perceive the actual denotatum of чулки, I am sorry if so:)

I have no idea what you are trying to say. Are you asking about something? —Stephen (Talk) 23:23, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
5 socks ↔ and a pair of socks (just smb.'s socks, usually) represent different ideas.

PS. Look! We have a separate article for socks! o!k
The only reason we have a separate article for socks is to identify it as the plural of sock and to link it to sock. socks is not a complete article, it’s only a redirect. чулок only has the genitive plural чулок, not чулков. I don’t get what you mean about 5 socks and a paif of socks representing different ideas. In both, socks is the same word, same meaning, same idea. The difference is in the use of five and pair. —Stephen (Talk) 18:55, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You are not a linguist, aren't you? What do you know about concepts and denotata? 5 socks represents an idea of a collection of 5 similar things. While a pair of socks tells us that we can deal with a single (though separable (but we are able to split many things!)) fit set of clothing. Not 1 sock of 15 size and green colour and the other of 2 size and purple. Josh L. 15:16, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
