This character occurs in the first chapter of 莊子 http://www.ltivs.ilc.edu.tw/library/elecbooks/books/chuang/c01.htm

The sentence is 日月出矣而爝火不息,其於光也,不亦難乎 "When the sun or the moon has risen, yet your torch is still alight, and there is an excess of light, is that not a waste?"

I would therefore translate 爝 to mean "torch". --Gak 22:58, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed WT:RFV#爝 as you're not challenging the validity of the definition, which is what we call "verification". Instead I'll tag the page so that Chinese editors can find it. Mglovesfun (talk) 11:52, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have created a Mandarin section for your character. I played around with your translation a bit, just for fun. I was trying to get it a little closer to the original. In the second part of the sentence, 於 is a verb meaning "to compare." Therefore, the most accurate (somewhat awkward) translation would be, "Would it not be difficult to compare its light [with the light of the sun and moon]?" i.e. the light of the torch would pale in comparison, hence my translation. Let me know what you think. -- A-cai 22:38, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
