Etym[edit]

The OED shrugs with "the spelling with e probably represents a colloquial Arabic pronunciation" but is obviously wrong. "Colloquial Arabic" here either means Egyptian, Ottoman Turkish, or some other dialect if that even is the origin instead of borrowing from French, Italian, etc. Anyone have anything better? — LlywelynII 11:04, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
