According to my edition of the OED 'amoung' is not an historical spelling. I only have the first edition, so a later one might include it. This spelling seems to be used as a hypercorrection by people making bogus claims of superior knowledge.

-> Please, what is your basis for such statement: "This spelling seems to be used as a hypercorrection by people making bogus claims of superior knowledge." I would have expected the presence of the 'u' to be consistent with English spelling such as honour over honor.
