I wonder[edit]

If this ever been pluralized as 'ani' since it ends in -us, like octopus>octupi. Seems inconsistent. Dictabeard 19:17, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting example you chose, seeing as (deprecated template usage) octopi is not actually a correct formation. Anus is directly from Latin (via Middle English according to the OED), and it is in the second declension which makes the pluralization ani in Latin. I am not sure where the current common pluralization came from, but according to Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary it is also pluralized 'ani. - [The]DaveRoss 19:29, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference, there are Latin words that end in -us and -is that do not pluralize with -i... penis for example stays penis. In the anal sense, the Latin word anus does pluralize as ani, but I've never seen someone talk about more than one anal opening without using an informal word. Buttholes, shitslots, whatever the case may be. — [ R·I·C ] opiaterein19:31, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
