The difference is whether the thing that is batlike is like a bat itself (a batlike creature) or like a part, aspect, characteristic of a bat (a batlike wing). Almost all words ending in -like can be used this way. Whether it is worth mentioning or not, I don't know. Such metonymy is very common in many forms (probably in all languages). Referring to the US Presidency as "the White House" is another type of metonymy. DCDuring TALK 13:05, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
