Source missing!!

Though this translation is near to my own, (Holm, JIES 2011), without any source these notes are completely worthless. The author obviously has no notion at all of scientific or scholarly work or the guidelines of wikipedia!!! 195.4.79.173 06:39, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

This is not the only entry that's missing a reference, but this does not necessarily mean that it's wrong. As long as it is correct as far as the rules of the comparative method are concerned and reflects scholarship theory, reference can also be added later on. All main contributors to the Albanian etymologies know how Wikipedia works, I wouldn't be so rush in passing judgment!! Besides, if you happen to have the source at hand, why don't you go ahead and add it yourself? Etimo (talk) 16:49, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

First of all, this is Wiktionary, not Wikipedia, so their guidelines are irrelevant. We share some principles such as neutral point of view, but not everything.

For etymologies, we do try to require references, but in practice, there are just too many entries and too few who have access to the appropriate reference works. Keeping etymologies accurate is one of the hardest parts of maintaining this dictionary- especially for lesser-known fields such as Albanian etymology.

When you say "translation", though, you're getting into areas where we rely only on usage, not on authoritative sources or references. This is a descriptive dictionary, so for us words mean what speakers of the language think they mean, as demonstrated by usage, not what dictionaries or language authorities say they mean (we do try to tag non-standard and proscribed terms so people don't use them where it's important to be correct).

If we were talking about Tocharian B or Gothic, which are only accessible due to scholarly research, that would be different, but for Albanian, how Albanians use their language outweighs what's found in any dictionary or scholarly paper. Chuck Entz (talk) 21:43, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
