A (television) converter was used in the early 1980's to extend television's capability from 12 channels (2 to 13) to more channels. Early converters went to 65 channels, and later converterts went to up to 125 channels. Converters became extinct when television manufacturers included this capability in their televisions. A converter is also known as a set-top-box as the box would sit on your televison. The most popular converter was likley the Jerald 440.

Later on, converters were sold modified so they could decode pay-tv signals.

The term "converter" is often misused by people when they are referring to the television remote control.
